Mission Report India - January 2008.
This is the travel report from our 11th mission trip to India since 1999. Our activities in India are geographically concentrated on Andrhra Pradesh (AP; seven times the size of The Netherlands, 76 million inhabitants) and Oriossa (OR, four times; 36 million inhabitants), and can be dividend into four mission areas:
* The Mighty Fortress (TMF) Children's home, Kannurupalem (AP)
* Remote Area of Andhra Pradesh (AP)
* Indravati Colony (IC) leprosy camp, Nabarangpur (OR)
* Remote Area of Orissa (OR)
Both TMF and IC are mainly supported by third parties, being primariily friends, relatives and ex-colleagues, in number around 25 donors. Both projects have a predominantly human character, although the management is driven by Christian principles, and spreading the Gospel is our goal. Access to help and support is not restricted by religion and / or gender. Both projects are separately accounted for in the annual report of our foundation. For more details we refer to our annual report. For both Remotre Area projects is no - or hardly - outside support, except for a few incidental occasions.
Childrens Home "The Mighty Fortress"Kannurupalem AP
We started the children's home around eight years ago, and expanded in size thereafter. At this point in time we have 40 children of which 22 stay with us now for four years or longer. Counting from the beginning is of no use, because we had only a few children at that time. Being not an orphanage but rather a children's home, the outflow ratio is higher than in orphanages. The home has an outstanding reputation, and many children are on our waiting list.
We decided to raise the salaries of our staff, for we do not want to pay too low a salary. The minimum salary we pay is around € 45 a month. A promising teacher and potential manager is Ruth Helena Paradeshi, Koti's daughter. She earns least of all teachers, and works hardest of all. For her knowledge of English is mainly passive, we promised a boost in her salary next year and a bonus of $ 250 if she is able to speak English fluently next year.
We face extra investments for our home. The entire building had to be painted (€ 800), the cess pool has to be emptied, the bore well needs new piping and a new water storage tank has to be installed. These capital outlays are not included in the € 25 per child/month we need to cover the running cost excluding school expenses and salaries. The dining hall is still not finished yet, and it will cost another € 6.000 to complete is. We decided to keep it like that for the time being.
Since 1 1/2 years now we teach not only the home children, but the children of the village as well. We have 60 village children right now, and no one is taken back by the parents. Our school is the only English-Telugu Medium School; the next one is at 25 kilometres distance. Our school has government approval, and from next year on we will run a High School (class 10). Total number of children at that time: at least 140. The salary that the government pays per teacher/month is close to € 70, up to 80-110 for post graduate teachers. We pay a little bit less. We are happy with the teachers we have, but are looking for a real good teacher of English who understands the necessity to speak the language fluently.
Once a week we supply fresh water buffalo milk to 30 children in Kannurupalem and 100 in Burugupalem, a nearby village that suffers from extreme poverty. Much help is needed here. We pay pensions to 30 pensioners in Kannurupalem, supply food twice a month to feed the poor, and run a sewing school (11 treadle sewing machines).
Remote Area (AP)
The remote area of AP flows over in the Remote Area of OR, and stretches over hndreds of kilometres. The entire region must be twice or thrice the size of The Netherlands. This is the area where the Naxalls (or: Naxlites) are particularly active. In 2006 over 750 people got killed, and the government has no real power in this region. During our stay around 50 churches and hundreds of houses were burnt down. We are active in a part of this Remote Area, covering a size of 10-15.000km2. Around 175 pastors ae working in this region; some working independently, others belonging to small groups that are supported by Indian or foreign churches. Our group of pastors (23) is leading in this region. We supply a monthly income, build a church for every pastor, gave all of them a bicycle and bought a Mahindra Bolero 7-seats off road vehcle. During our stay we organized a two days pastors campaign, led by Bob Bernard, a very talented speaker from Minneapolis. Around 250 pastors showed up. In the night we organized a village campaign. It is really astonishing that so many people in the Remote Area are willing to accept Jezus. We were in a village at the ends of the world; you even could not reach the village but by foot. There were 500 villagers, and 200 of them where Christians. When we were there, 42 people took baptism! In Rolangi (120 people) and surrounding villages till 3 years ago there was no single Christian. Now there are almost hundred! In the last 1 1/2 years we have built 9 churches; 11 more have to be built. The inside dimensions are 4,5x6,5 metres, and the building seats around 100 people Price per church: between € 1.600-2.000. The churches are donated to the pastors. In 2008 we will start a Bible school for our pastors (compulsory). We will provide study books, and other pastors in the RA are invited to join.
Leprosy camp Indravati Colony, Nabarangpur (OR)
We started our support to the lepers in Nabarangpur two years ago, and really made a big difference in their lives. The lepers are now spread over two camps, Indravati Colony and the Leprosy Hospital - which is actrually no hospital at all. We take care of 53 people of whom 9 children in the age of 0-9 years. As far as appropriate they all go to a public school. We supply meals twice a day, provide clothing, soap, detergents and kerosene. Last year we installed a 50 feet well, for the water was undrinkable and made them sick.
From 2009 on we have to replenish the tatched roofs by corrugates tin sheets. This year however we should start building twelve new houses to move the lepers from the Leprosy Hospital to Indravati Colony. The houses will cost € 720 each. Moreover, we need a toilet building, for there is no toilet facility, neither in the camp nor elswhere. The cost of this will be around € 1.000 inclusive digging the cass pool.
